Filament I.D. / Activated Sludge - Two Day Intensive -
AWWS in cooperation with Michael Richard Wastewater Microbiology will offer a two day activated sludge microbiology class October 7-8, 2010. The course will be given at the AWWS training room in Fort Collins, CO. Instructors include Michael Richard, Ph.D. and Bob Alberts, Principle of AWWS.
This hands-on course will cover activated sludge microbiology, filament identification, and use of the microbiology information in operation and troubleshooting activated sludge problems. Use of the phase contrast microscope with actual samples will be emphasized. Techniques covered will be sample collection and preservation; use of the phase contrast microscope; staining techniques used in filament identification; phase contrast observation and identification of filaments; and observation and use of other wastewater bacteria used in troubleshooting and process optimization including biological nitrification and phosphorus removal.
The following outline will be used:
Day 1
8:00 - 8:30 Introductions and Course Objectives
8:30 - 12:00 Lectures on activated sludge microbiology and filament identification techniques
12:00 - 1:00 Lunch (provided)
1:00 - 4:00 Laboratory examination of good and bad sludges using phase contrast microscopes (one for each participant)
4:00 - end Questions and Discussion
Day 2
8:00 - 12:00 Filament observation and identification using Instructor supplied samples
12:00 - 1:00 Lunch (provided)
1:00 - 3:00 Participant examination of their own samples (please bring MLSS and foam samples from your facility to the class)
3:00 - 4:00 Lecture on use of the microbiology findings in plant process control and troubleshooting
4:00 - 4:30 Questions and Discussion
The course includes a copy of the Manual on Activated Sludge Bulking, Foaming and Other Solids Separation Problems, 3rd Ed., by David Jenkins, Michael Richard and Glen Daigger; and additional handouts. Training Units have been applied for with the Colorado Department of Health and Environment.
Cost is $400 which includes the Manual, lunches for the two days, and tender loving care by the instructors.
